Modeling the Sherman Tank in 1/72nd Scale |
Fine Scale Factory Article by Doug Chaltry; last updated 10 November 2007. I have always preferred tracks cast in white metal, because they can be very detailed, and it is quite easy to form them into the proper shapes around the wheels. Very few sets of aftermarket tracks are available in this medium, this set of Sherman winter tracks being one of them. These are basically T54 type tracks from the Italeri (ESCI) Sherman kit modified with extended end connectors in order to increase the surface area of the tracks and reduce ground pressure. They are mostly well cast, though some of the lengths have missing end connectors which were short-shot. These are quite easy to fix with small pieces of styrene strip, or they can be left off, as these end connectors were easily lost from the tracks. Ten lengths of track are included in each set, which is sort of an unusual number. It is far more than needed for one tank model, but not enough for two. But one can never have enough tracks in the spares box, and they will look good attached to the tank hull as added armor protection, so I'm not complaining. |
