Modeling the Sherman Tank in 1/72nd Scale |
ExtraTech Article by Doug Chaltry; last updated 12 November 2007. Considering the large number of models available of US tanks armed with the 76mm cannon, it is surprising that so few ammunition sets for super-detailers and diorama builders have been marketed. Three types of items are included in this set: loose 76mm shells, individual storage tubes, and storage boxes of two sizes. The long boxes held two cannon shells each, in their shipping tubes, but I don't know what the small boxes are for. All items are extremely well cast, and this set will go a long way to enhancing any 76mm-armed Allied vehicle model. To my eye, it looks as though the ammunition represents APC (Armor Piercing Capped) rounds, though if painted appropriately, they could also stand in for HE (High Explosive) rounds. Industrious modelers may want to take some sand paper to them in order to craft the shorter HVAP (High Velocity Armor Piercing) rounds, also known as "Hypershot" (more prevalent in tank destroyer units than in Sherman units). |
