I believe that this was
the first Jumbo kit/conversion made available to us in
1/72nd scale, a very long time ago. Unfortunately, Leva
Productions is no longer producing. That said, however,
this wasn't a particularly spectacular set, and there are
now better options out there for a Jumbo Sherman,
especially when Dragon finally releases their
long-announced Jumbo kit. This Leva set was designed to convert the ESCI M4A3, therefore the new hull armor parts are a little short for use on newer, more accurate M4A3 kits. It's a rather simple conversion: three hull armor parts, a new transmission housing, a new turret, and a few smaller details. The hull armor is pretty straightforward, though I don't like the shroud attachment rail around the opening for the hull machinegun. The turret is what really brings down this set, as it was based on Leva's 76mm T-23 turret, which as described elsewhere on this site, is quite poorly shaped, being particularly flat in profile. The detail on the turret is OK, but with its poor shape, it's not really a viable option for use. It's nice that the commander's hatch was left open. Bear in mind that to complete the conversion, you will also need extended end connectors on the tracks used for this kit. I recall many years ago several complaints that Leva's resin was often times very sticky, as though it didn't cure completely. I never experienced that poor resin until this set, as these parts are indeed, quite sticky. I understand that there was a poor batch of resin used at one time, and this certainly was not the normal condition of Leva's parts. As stated above, it's not a great loss that this set is no longer available, but it is pretty cool to have it for its historical value, and perhaps I will actually use it to convert one of my ESCI M4A3s as it was intended. Many thanks to Michael Hatch for his very generous gift box that included this item. |
